@DMT: The term "AJAX" was coined by Jesse James Garret -- from the same blog post that started the term, Jesse answered the following question:

Q. Some of the Google examples you cite don’t use XML at all. Do I have to use XML and/or XSLT in an Ajax application?

A. No. XML is the most fully-developed means of getting data in and out of an Ajax client, but there’s no reason you couldn’t accomplish the same effects using a technology like JavaScript Object Notation or any similar means of structuring data for interchange.

Also (though I cannot find it now) I recall that Jesse later stated that AJAX was a backronym, and that it should no longer be considered "Asynchronous JavaScript and XML" but rather a juxtaposition of several technologies (JS, CSS, XML, JSON, etc.) - which is why I refer to it as "Ajax" and not "AJAX."

Hi, nicely commented tutorial. I also would like to see the php server-side script for the "voting script" and "shoutbox". This would make your tut more easy to understand and complete.
